This fun, fantastic class will give you the skills and confidence to paddle on the Puget Sound and beyond. Your professionally trained instructors will guide you through solo and two-person rescues, sling rescues, wet exit, equipment selection and on-water safety.
This is the most important skill you can learn as a kayaker and it is a prerequisite for all off-site rentals.
You will not only increase safety on the water after this class, you will be much more confident and have more fun when out paddling.
The Eskimo Roll is not included in this class.
No paddling experience is needed, all levels are welcome to join and practice rescues.
If you would like to get comfortable in a a kayak and learn basic paddle strokes before this class, please see our Sea Kayak 1 class. However, these skills are not required--this class is excellent for ALL experience levels.
Sea Kayak 1 and 2 (or equivalent) are required to take Sea Kayak 3: The Essentials.
After check-ins and introductions, on land we'll go over the ten essentials of sea kayak safety, kayak fitting, kayak nomenclature and wet exits.
Then we'll head onto the water to do wet exits, t-rescues, cowboy rescues and the paddle float rescue.
If we have time at the end, we'll go over bracing strokes (capsize prevention!).

"Thank you again for scheduling the Saturday outing for our group. It was wonderful, Hawk was an excellent instructor and everyone had a great time, and 4 of us would like to sign up for the SK-2 class this Thursday evening."
"Thank you so much again for the fabulous lesson today! We all had an absolute blast. When Kendalls mom dropped Kate off at our house this afternoon, the girls were begging us to go tomorrow. They were offering to pay for it, even! I think weve got some lifelong SUPers on our hands..."
"I actually went to the shop two weekends ago to buy the boys their wetsuits. They stocked a lot of really great equipment for my kayak building projects. It is good to know that they can order items that are not on the website as well, as I am always looking for parts that are difficult to find sometimes."
