Learn the basics of sea kayaking and get comfortable in a kayak on Poulsbo's protected Liberty Bay. After a lesson on our dock, you'll take a tour with your friendly instructor in a stable single kayak to practice what you've learned.
Your instructor will cover basic kayak safety, paddle strokes, how to fit a kayak and personal flotation device, proper techniques, nomenclature and basic design, body dynamics for efficient strokes, how to choose a kayak for your needs, getting into and out of a kayak and other important basic skills to give you a strong foundation for a lifetime of paddling.
This class can be taken before or after Sea Kayak 2: Capsize Recovery.
No experience is needed!
Sea Kayak 1 can be taken as a private group or personal lesson any day, almost any time, year-round. It can also be incorporated into other programs.
For more informationabout group or private lessons, contact our program director at (360) 297-4659, 1-800-592-5983 or firstname.lastname@example.org.
With the proper technique and knowledge, kayaking can be a lifelong sport.
We want you to come away from this class feeling comfortable in a
kayak, with skills you can build on for the rest of your life.
From this class we recommend Sea Kayak 2: Capsize Recovery. This is
an ESSENTIAL kayaking skill, especially for paddlers in the northwest.
Sea Kayak 1 and Sea Kayak 2 are interchangeable. We will keep you
upright in Sea Kayak 1, but if you're nervous, take Sea Kayak 2 first
and we'll help dispel that fear.
Before heading onto the water, we'll go over the basics of kayaking: paddle strokes, fitting a kayak, kayak parts, basic water safety and how to stay upright.
Then we'll get outfitted and take a short guided tour on Poulsbo's Liberty Bay to learn and practice efficient strokes and paddling techniques.
After our tour we'll land back at our dock and fill out a paddle punch card for you so you can come back to paddle again!

"Thank you again for scheduling the Saturday outing for our group. It was wonderful, Hawk was an excellent instructor and everyone had a great time, and 4 of us would like to sign up for the SK-2 class this Thursday evening."
"Thank you so much again for the fabulous lesson today! We all had an absolute blast. When Kendalls mom dropped Kate off at our house this afternoon, the girls were begging us to go tomorrow. They were offering to pay for it, even! I think weve got some lifelong SUPers on our hands..."
"I actually went to the shop two weekends ago to buy the boys their wetsuits. They stocked a lot of really great equipment for my kayak building projects. It is good to know that they can order items that are not on the website as well, as I am always looking for parts that are difficult to find sometimes."
